Two people killed and more than 90 injured as super typhoon Yagi hits southern China

September 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least two people have died and more than 90 have been injured as Super Typhoon Yagi swept through southern China’s Hainan province, authorities have confirmed, adding that more than a million people have been evacuated in the south of the Asian giant.

The two dead were residents of Dingan County, one of the worst affected counties, while 80 of the injured are residents of the city of Haikou. Yagi has also left more than 1.5 million homes without electricity, although a fifth of them have already been reconnected to the grid.

After passing through Hainan, the super typhoon made landfall in Xuwen County, Guangdong Province, with winds of around 210 kilometers per hour, prompting authorities to relocate nearly 575,000 people as a precaution.

The number of evacuees adds to the approximately 420,000 previously evacuated in Hainan, where Haikou Meilan International Airport has also been closed and is not expected to resume operations until Sunday, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

The typhoon had already made its mark in the Philippines – where it left 16 dead – and Hong Kong, and its evolution is being closely monitored in Vietnam, which is also threatened by the path predicted by meteorologists. The latest data collected make it equivalent to a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale.
