Two people killed and 20 injured in an attack on military vehicles in Herat, Afghanistan

Uzbekistan's president threatens 'strict measures' in response to Karakalpakistan protests

July 4. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least two people have died and another 20 have been injured in an attack carried out this Monday against two military vehicles in the Afghan province of Herat, located in the northwest of the country.

A spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Defense has confirmed the death of two soldiers, while the Police have highlighted that an attacker has died during the clashes.

Sources quoted by the Afghan television network Ariana have indicated that the vehicles were transporting civilian employees of the Army’s 207th Al Faruq Corps, without at the moment having claimed responsibility for the attack.

In this sense, sources from the 207th Al Faruq Corps of the Army have detailed that among the injured there are two children and 18 members of this organization, as reported by the aforementioned chain.

The spokesman for the Herat Security Department, Mohamad Shah Rasuli, confirmed the attack in statements to the Tolo TV network and pointed out that one of the attackers had died, without giving further details.

At the moment no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) has carried out dozens of attacks since the Taliban seized power in the Central Asian country in August 2021.

ISKP, which considers the Taliban to be traitors to the orthodoxy of ‘sharia’ or Islamic law and defends a much harsher interpretation, has been the target of a security campaign by the Taliban in the face of their attacks.
