() — Authorities found the body of a male 550 feet from a vehicle associated with the suspect in the shooting of two teachers at a Denver school, according to Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw. “We have not identified the body at this time,” he said. Residents of the area, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, no longer need to shelter in place, according to the sheriff.
Denver police said in a Twitter post that they responded to a shooting at East High School in Colorado in which two adults were injured.
“At this time, two adult victims have been located and transported to area hospitals. The suspect is believed to be no longer on the scene and investigators are working to develop additional information,” says a Tweet Posted by Denver Police.
The two injured are school personnel, according to a Denver Public Schools update.
Both have been transported to area hospitals, the school board says. Their conditions have not been disclosed.
The suspect in the shooting is a student, according to a statement from Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. The official said that, in addition to the two school staff members, a student was also transported to receive treatment for an allergic reaction.
East High School officials have implemented a controlled release for students when authorized by Denver police, according to a tweet from Denver Public Schools.
Students traveling alone were escorted to their cars, students taking the bus were held on campus until their bus arrived, and students who were dropped off by a parent were able to be picked up at a separate location, the tweet said.
East High School has about 2,500 students in grades 9 through 12 and is the largest and highest-performing comprehensive high school of all Denver Public Schools, according to the school system.
The high school is located in the City Park neighborhood of the Colorado capital and is considered a Denver Historic Landmark for its architecture in the Jacobethan Revival style. The clock tower atop the school is similar in style to Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, the school’s website notes.
What do we know about the victims and the suspect?
One of the shooting victims is in serious but stable condition, and the other victim is currently in surgery in critical condition, Police Chief Ron Thomas said at a news conference.
He said both victims are men.
Paramedics were on campus to respond to a student who had a medical problem when the shooting occurred, according to Mayor Hancock.
“They were able to immediately start providing support and treatment to the people who were injured,” Hancock said during a news conference.
He said he believes that “will play a very important role in his eventual recovery.”
According to Police Chief Thomas, the suspect was on a “safety plan” and had to be searched by school officials.
Thomas said a handgun was recovered and multiple shots were fired during the search, hitting both men who are school administrators.
The suspect fled the school, he said, and police are looking for him. He is a student under the age of 18, according to Thomas.
Officials are asking the public for help in locating the suspect, but are warning them not to approach him as he is considered to be armed and dangerous.
Thomas declined to comment why the student was on a security plan, but said he was booked into an administrative area of the school away from other students before he was allowed to attend class each day.
