The Nigerian Police have arrested two soldiers suspected of the murder of a Muslim cleric in the state of Yobe, in the north of the country, for reasons still under investigation.
The two unidentified soldiers acted in complicity when it came to murdering religious Goni Gashua on Friday night in the town of Jaji Maji, according to the statement of charges collected by the Nigerian newspaper ‘Premium Times’.
“I can confirm that the soldiers are in our custody and have confessed to the crime, but the investigation is still ongoing,” local police spokesman Dungus Abdulkarim told the outlet.
Local witnesses from the self-defense forces, on condition of anonymity, have accused one of the soldiers of shooting the cleric to death to steal his vehicle and his companion of trying to hide the body.
