() – Two people died and others remain trapped after a hotel collapsed in a village in the heart of western Germany’s Moselle wine region.

There were 14 people in the Kröv building at the time of the collapse, a fire department spokesperson told on Wednesday.

A man and a woman have died and three people are trapped, according to the Trier Police in a press conference this Wednesday. One of the bodies has not yet been recovered.

The trapped people have been able to contact the Police by telephone, so the authorities know where they are in the building and what condition they are in.

A crane is installed after a hotel partially collapses overnight.

Although the building is still partially intact, it is moving at a speed of 4 millimeters per hour, making rescue operations difficult.

Because the hotel’s roofs have collapsed, police said, a drill is being used from above to try to access people in the rubble.

Around 250 firefighters, paramedics, police and technical relief personnel are on site, including special forces, rescue dog teams and drone units.

Police said the cause of the collapse is still unknown.

The lower part of the building dates back to the 17th century, while the upper two floors were added in 1980, according to Trier police.

Police said work on the building was ongoing as of Tuesday, adding that three houses in the vicinity of the hotel were evacuated.
