While we were sold Twitter Blue payment verification – among other measures –as the solution to all the problems of spam, bots and other unwanted content on Twitterthe reality is that this paid subscription – which is not bad for the coffers of Twitter, by the way – it has given spammers a golden pass to stay ahead of even legitimate users in the social network’s algorithm.
Now, as we read in the Twitter support account itself, as of July 14 -that is, tomorrow- will enable a new function in the messaging system of the social network that will allow us to filter messages from verified users that we do not follow.
This is something that will allow us to largely avoid direct messages from spammers who have paid to get a free pass. The problem is so big that even legitimate users who have paid to have Twitter Blue have had to resort – after the inclusion of this feature by the company –to hide their blue markings so as not to be confused by bots, for example.
It remains to be seen if this will reduce the problem of verified bots, but the reality is that it is a problem that would never have existed with the old verification system.
