At the Kazan International Economic Forum, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, former president and father of the current Turkmen head of state, called for “an Islamic initiative in the name of peace, mutual understanding and trust” to be presented to the UN. He pointed to relations between Russia and Islamic countries as a model.
Kazan () – The president of the Senate of Turkmenistan and former president of the republic, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, led his country’s delegation a few days ago to the Kazan International Economic Forum, in Tatarstan, on “Russia and the Islamic world”, speaking out in favor of “fidelity to traditional values, peace and social justice, which must connect with contemporary trends and innovative implementations in the economy.”
The senior president recalled that on March 21, the UN General Assembly approved Turkmenistan’s proposal to proclaim 2025 as the “international year of peace and trust.” It would be a “roadmap” made up of a series of approaches and proposals based on the postulates of Islam as a “religion of peace, goodness and justice.”
Berdymukhamedov also recalled that Turkmenistan and other Turkic countries are celebrating the 300th anniversary of the poet Makhtumkuli Fragi, and expressed his hope that “this commemoration does not end with solemnities and events, but becomes the starting point for the formation of a new cultural awareness and scientific cooperation between our country and Russia, and that can inspire writers and scholars from many countries in common projects. Together with the President of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, the Turkmen “father of the country” visited the Russia Halal Expo exhibition, with numerous testimonies of joint activism between Turkmens and Tatars, including in the business of land and air transport, with heavy vehicles and helicopters.
A special space was dedicated to the Turkmen art of carpet production, with its special techniques and methodologies, as well as a corner to the “famous healing herbs of Turkmenistan.” All invited countries presented their most notable achievements in the fields of food, medicine and light industry. The Prime Minister of Tatarstan, Aleksej Pesošin, also stressed that “the Islamic world has always been and remains one of the most important economic partners in the world for Russia, and in recent years our relations have been intensifying.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a greeting message to the participants in the Forum, stating that Russia’s joint initiatives with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation are today “decisive in addressing the most important regional and global issues”, and They must receive increasing support. Berdymukhamedov commented on these words at the closing of the forum, stating that “Russia and the Islamic countries constitute a great example of how relations between the state and the people should be built: with respect and affirming the rights of each, but also satisfying the demands and needs of all parties, without using forms of pressure or threats. The Turkmen leader thanked Minnikhanov for “his great work as a politician and diplomat, in cultivating open relations and mutual trust with the leaders of many States, and we see many successes ahead on the path we are traveling together.”
