MADRID Dec. 13 () –
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Hakan Fidan, confirmed this Friday that the Turkish Embassy in Damascus will reopen this Saturday, more than twelve years after Ankara suspended relations due to tensions between both nations derived from the civil war in Syria.
With this announcement, the Turkish diplomatic authorities confirm the news already reported the day before by the state agency Anadolu, which reported that the Turkish ambassador to Mauritania, Burhan Koroglu, will now serve as chargé d’affaires in Syria.
Speaking from Ankara, Minister Fidan confirmed that during the last days of the Bashar al Assad regime, Turkey “paved the way for this to happen in a non-bloody way by continuing negotiations with two important acts”, possibly in reference to Russia. and Iran.
“Syria now has a dominant national government,” clarified Fidan, who stressed that these new Islamist authorities “do not recognize” the Kurdish militias Popular Protection Units (YPF), considered the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. (PKK), classified as a terrorist organization by Ankara.
The Turkish Embassy ceased its activities in March 2012 in the context of the Syrian civil war and due to the deterioration of security conditions in a country that now, more than twelve years later, sees an offensive by rebels and jihadists has managed to overthrow the Al Assad regime.
ISRAELI INCURSION IN SYRIA
On the other hand, Fidan has taken the opportunity to condemn Israeli advances in Syrian territory through the Golan Heights, a territory belonging to Syria but annexed by Israel in 1981 despite the disagreement of the international community.
The minister has warned that this strategy of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is “dangerous”, a position shared by a large part of the international community, especially by actors in the Middle East region.
Precisely this Friday, the Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has ordered the Army to prepare to maintain its positions on Mount Hermon, taken by Israeli forces after the fall of the Syrian regime and of strategic importance, during the winter months. .
Katz himself has published a photograph on his social media account in which he appears with Netanyahu in the Golan Heights, from where they “observe” Mount Hermon, “which returned to Israeli control after 51 years.” “An exciting historical moment,” he said.
