“Türkiye will take all necessary measures to fight terrorism,” said the Foreign Minister
Dec. 8 () –
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called for an “orderly” transition in Syria following the fall of President Bashar al Assad’s regime after the capital, Damascus, fell to rebel forces led by the jihadist group. Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) and its allied factions.
“The new administration must be established in an orderly manner. The principle of inclusion must never be compromised. There must be no desire for revenge. It is time to unite and rebuild the country,” he stressed, thus urging all actors in the region to calm.
In this sense, he has assured that they will do everything possible so that terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State or the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) – which Ankara considers a terrorist group – “do not take advantage of the situation.”
“Turkey will take all necessary measures to fight terrorism. All minorities, Christians, Kurds and non-Muslims, must be treated fairly. All weapons and chemical weapons must be controlled,” he declared.
Likewise, Fidan has highlighted that it is essential to “guarantee a solid transition period, without violations against the civilian population,” as well as having fundamental services and structures to “counter threats.”
Fidan has also assured that Bashar al Assad’s government “should have taken advantage” of the rebel offensive to “reconcile with its own people.” “When all attempts failed, President (Turkey Recep Tayyip) Erdogan extended his hand to the regime and called for national unity, although this was rejected,” he said.
