Turkey sends Cold War cluster bombs to Ukraine, media say

Jan. 11 () –

Turkey would have started sending cluster bombs to Ukraine at the end of 2022, after several requests from kyiv to the Biden Administration, the magazine ‘Foreign Policy’ has learned.

The weapons, designed to destroy tanks by exploding in submunitions, would have been sent from Ankara since the beginning of November 2022, according to the aforementioned media.

However, the sources consulted by ‘Foreign Policy’ have not been able to confirm whether Turkish weapons have been used during the combat, which began on February 24, 2022, by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“After the US denied (Ukraine’s) access to cluster munitions, Turkey was the only place they could get them,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

In this sense, he added that this measure proves that, although “Turkey is close to Russia in some aspects, it has become a very important military support for Ukraine.”
