Turkey detains nearly 20 suspected Islamic State members in series of operations in Istanbul

July 4. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Turkish authorities have arrested about 20 suspected members of the Islamic State jihadist group on Monday as part of a series of simultaneous operations in the city of Istanbul (west), as confirmed by security sources.

These sources have detailed to the Turkish state news agency, Anatolia, that the raids have been carried out at 20 points in the city to try to arrest 28 suspects, 19 of whom are already in custody.

The Turkish authorities have carried out dozens of operations against the group in recent years and in June 2021 they announced the arrest of a senior Islamic State official considered to be responsible for the activities of the jihadist group in the country within the framework of a operation carried out by the intelligence services in Syria.

Islamic State, which Turkey declared a terrorist group in 2013, has carried out several attacks on Turkish soil in recent years, killing at least 300 people and injuring hundreds more.
