The Tunisian Ministry of the Interior reported this Thursday on the arrest of Mahmud al Salami, alias 'Yusef', leader of the terrorist group Ajnad al Jilafa – linked to the Islamic State – who was classified as a “very dangerous” individual.
A unit specialized in anti-terrorist operations of the Tunisian Army has managed to ambush him near the Kasserine Pass, a mountainous area located in the center-west of the country, according to a statement from the Ministry published on its Facebook social network account.
'Yusef' had allegedly participated in several terrorist attacks against state security forces and in intimidation actions against civilians in the area.
During the operation, which is still active in search of more terrorists in the surrounding area, weapons and explosives have been seized.
Tunisian security forces have launched dozens of anti-terrorist operations in recent years, many of them focused on the province of Kasserine and other areas on the border with Algeria, which is very porous and the scene of arms and drug trafficking.
