This Friday Aileen Cannon, judge of the Southern District Court of Florida, ruled that the jury trial against former President Donald Trump for handling confidential documents will begin in May 2024. Date close to the end of the primary elections in which Trump leads in voting intentions and will be defined in July 2024 during the Republican Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Had the judge postponed the trial until after the presidential election, it would have opened up the possibility for Trump to influence the Justice Department to drop the case, something that was going to be widely criticized.
Recall that Trump faces 37 counts, including more than 30 Espionage Act violations, on allegations of withholding national security documents. Trump will have a very busy schedule between campaign events and legal subpoenas.
The former president faces criminal charges in Manhattan, with a trial scheduled for March 2024. He also faces civil lawsuits in New York scheduled for this fall and early next year. Legal troubles and media attention, which Republican analysts say could end up favoring Trump in his political interests.
