One of Donald Trump’s lawyers is leaving the former president’s legal team as the investigation into the withholding of secret documents appears to be entering its final stages.
Timothy Parlatore told Associated Press that his departure has nothing to do with Trump and that it does not reflect his opinion of the Justice Department’s investigation — which he has called misguided and overly aggressive — or the strength of the government’s evidence. He added that he believes he has served the former president well. previously reported on Parlatore’s departure.
Parlatore has been one of the key members of Trump’s legal team in an investigation led by Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith into possession of hundreds of documents with a confidentiality seal at the residence of the former president in Florida and about possible attempts to obstruct that investigation.
In recent months, a special jury has been hearing testimony from various witnesses close to Trump. Federal prosecutors questioned another Trump lawyer, M. Evan Corcoran, before the jury, seeking an exception to a confidentiality agreement between a lawyer and his client. Parlatore testified voluntarily in December about efforts to recover secret documents.
Last month, Parlatore and other Trump lawyers sent a letter to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner laying out a series of arguments in Trump’s favor and saying the Justice Department should be ordered to to give up the investigation.
Aside from finding out about the documents at Mar-a-Lago, Smith is also investigating Trump’s attempts and their allies for overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election and one of the witnesses is former Vice President Mike Pence. The Manhattan prosecutor’s office, for its part, has accused Trump of financial crimes in connection with payments to a pornographic actress who says she had an extramarital sexual relationship with Trump years ago.
In Georgia, Fulton County prosecutors are expected to announce the results of an investigation into attempts to overturn Trump’s electoral defeat of current President Joe Biden in that state in the coming months.
