Donald Trump criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine on Thursday, urged Republican lawmakers to cut bonus taxes and talked about tariffs during a visit to Capitol Hill, participants said, as he seeks to unite the party ahead of the U.S. election. November 5th.
In a closed-door meeting, Trump said he would work to expand the party’s narrow 218-213 majority in the House of Representatives.
Trump also encouraged House Republicans not to push for a national abortion ban and encouraged them to abandon internal disputes that have hampered their effectiveness, lawmakers said.
“We have to plan to lead because there are a lot of problems to fix,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters.
Trump was scheduled to meet with Senate Republicans for lunch and discuss campaign strategies.
The Republican presidential candidate was also scheduled to speak this Thursday before the Business Roundtable, an association in Washington, DC that brings together more than 200 company CEOs.
