Former President Donald Trump said Sunday that he “doesn’t believe” he would run for president again in 2028 if he fails to return to the White House in 2024.
“No, I don’t think so. I think it will be like this, it will be like this,” Trump said when asked by journalist Sharyl Attkisson if he would run again.
The comment was notable both because Trump appeared to rule out a fourth run for the White House and because he rarely admits the possibility that he could legitimately lose an election. Trump typically insists that could only happen if there was widespread fraud — a false allegation he made in 2020 and made again preemptively during his 2024 presidential campaign.
Trump would be 82 in 2028, a year older than President Joe Biden is now. Biden dropped out of the race in July after his disastrous debate performance and months of being criticized by Trump and other conservatives for being too old and erratic for office. Attkisson interviewed Trump for his show “Full Measure.” Also during the 22-minute interview, Trump defended his record on the coronavirus pandemic. He took credit for the development of COVID-19 vaccines developed during his presidency, while saying “they’re doing studies on the vaccines and we’re going to find out” if they’re safe.
Trump said Republicans have become skeptical of vaccines, even as Democrats are confident in them.
The 2028 statement came at the end of the interview, which also included a question about how Trump stays healthy. “I try to eat properly,” the former president said, prompting an incredulous reaction from Attkisson, who noted that Trump has become famous for his fondness for burgers.
“Proper burgers,” Trump said.
