Trump says he plans to attend Jimmy Carter’s funeral

US President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday that he plans to attend the funeral of former president Jimmy Carter.

Asked about it as he entered a New Year’s party at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, Trump responded: “I’ll be there.” Asked if he had spoken to members of the Carter family, Trump said he preferred not to say.

Funeral services honor Carter, who He died on Sunday at the age of 100.will take place in Georgia and Washington, beginning on January 4 and concluding on January 9.

Trump was a frequent and scathing critic of Carter during the campaign leading up to the November election, and used the high inflation rates of the 1970s to unfavorably compare President Joe Biden to Carter and his administration.

However, the president-elect was gracious about the former president in social media posts after Carter’s death, writing that the nation “owed a debt of gratitude” to him.

“Although I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our country, and all it stands for,” Trump wrote of Carter. “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my utmost respect.”

Dressed in a tuxedo as he entered the celebration, Trump spent a few minutes answering questions from reporters on various topics. He was asked about the possibility of a ceasefire in Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza, but only said: “Let’s see what happens.”

The president-elect added of the hostages kidnapped more than a year ago by Hamas, “I’ll put it this way: They better let the hostages come back soon.”

Trump also noted that he thought 2025 will be a “great year” and that “we are going to do fantastically well as a country.”

“There is a complete light on the whole world, not just our country. “There are a lot of happy people,” Trump said of the past few weeks.

Asked about his resolutions for the new year, Trump responded: “I just want everyone to be happy, healthy and well.”

Trump then took the stage to briefly address the crowd celebrating the New Year at Mar-a-Lago and promised to “do a great job as your president.”

For his part, Biden spent New Year’s Eve celebrating his niece Missy Owens’ wedding in Greenville, Delaware, followed by the reception in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Biden and first lady Jill Biden cut short their traditional vacation trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands to attend the ceremony.
