Trump nominates his father-in-law Charles Kushner as US ambassador to France

MADRID Nov. 30 () –

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, nominated this Saturday one of his in-laws, Charles Kushner, as the new United States ambassador to France.

Charles Kushner, a tycoon like Trump, is the father of Jared Kushner, husband of Ivanka Trump, eldest daughter of the president-elect. Jared Kushner occupied a prominent place as an advisor to Trump during his first administration, especially regarding the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and bilateral relations in the Middle East and Arab countries.

In a statement on his social network account, Truth Social, Trump describes Charles Kushner as “a great business leader, philanthropist and negotiator, who will be a firm defender of our country and its interests,” although it should be remembered that his appointment must be ratified by the US Senate, where the Republicans now enjoy a majority.

In 2005, Kushner Sr. was sentenced to two years in prison as part of a plea deal after pleading guilty to 18 counts of tax evasion, witness tampering and illegal campaign donations, paradoxically in favor of the Democratic Party.

The tampering charge was filed after Kushner devised a plot against his brother-in-law, William Schulder, the husband of his sister Ester and a former employee who became a witness for federal prosecutors in the case against the now nominated ambassador.

In 2020, Trump ended up pardoning Kushner, one of more than two dozen pardons the then-president issued after losing his reelection bid to Joe Biden.
