Trump nominates Cuban-born businessman Benjamín León Jr. as ambassador to Spain.

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has nominated businessman Benjamín León Jr., born in Cuba, as the next ambassador to Spain.

“He came to the United States from communist Cuba when he was 16 years old, with only five dollars in his pocket, and managed to turn his company, Leon Medical Centers, into an incredible business,” Trump said Thursday on his True Social network.

He also praised his philanthropic work linked to the health field. “He has helped support many worthy causes, including The League Against Cancer and important medical research at Johns Hopkins and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.”

The president-elect, who will take office on January 20, also recalled León Jr.’s contributions to the Benjamín León Jr. School of Nursing at Miami-Dade College and the Benjamín León Center for Geriatric Research and Education at the College of Medicine Herbert Wertheim of Florida International University (FIU).

León Jr. must receive approval from the Senate.

Recently, the president-elect nominated the commissioner of Miami-Dade County in Florida, Kevin Marino Cabrera, the diplomat Ron Johnson, the lawyer Dan Newlin and the doctor Peter Lamelas as his new ambassadors in Panama, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina, respectively.

He also announced his intention to send businessman Lou Rinaldi as head of mission in Uruguay and presenter Leah Francis Campos as diplomatic leader in the Dominican Republic.
