Trump is indicted for mishandling classified documents

Former United States President Donald Trump wrote on social media Thursday that President Joe Biden’s administration would have informed his lawyers that he has been accused.

“The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my lawyers that I have been indicted, apparently for the Box Hoax,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“This is truly a dark day for the United States of America,” Trump posted. “We are a country in serious and rapid decline, but together we will make America great again!”

Trump later wrote that he had been subpoenaed to appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday.

The former president did not provide evidence. The Justice Department has not publicly confirmed the allegation. But two people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to discuss it publicly told Associated Press that the indictment contains seven criminal counts. One of the people said that Trump’s team had been contacted by prosecutors shortly before the former president announced on his Truth Social platform that he had been indicted.

The seven charges would be related to the handling of classified documents and obstruction of justice. Reuters reported citing sources that Trump had been indicted by a federal grand jury for withholding classified government documents and obstruction of justice.

Reuters He could not immediately learn what specific charges the former president faces. In an affidavit in federal court last year, an FBI agent said there was probable cause to believe a number of crimes had been committed, including obstruction and unlawful withholding of sensitive defense records.

The US Department of Justice has been investigating whether Trump mishandled classified documents he kept after leaving the White House in 2021.

Investigators seized some 13,000 documents from Mar-a-Lago, the former president’s residence in Palm Beach, Florida, nearly a year ago. One hundred were marked as classified, despite the fact that one of Trump’s lawyers had previously said that all records with classified marks had been returned to the government.
