US President-elect Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that his administration has a plan to declare a national emergency and use military resources for mass deportations.
trump described as “true” a publication on the Truth Social network by Tom Fitton, president of the conservative group Judicial Watch, where he referred to some “good news” about the incoming administration, which would be “prepared to declare a national emergency, and will use military resources to reverse the invasion [de inmigrantes] under Biden, through a massive deportation program.”
Trump regained the White House by promising a broad anti-immigration campaign and pledged to implement what he described as an “unparalleled order” on the southern border.
The centerpiece of his re-election bid was the promise of deport a record number of people migrants, an operation that Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, estimated could expel a million people a year.
The president-elect has proposed using the National Guard to arrest undocumented immigrants and has also resorted to the Alien Enemies Act, 18th-century legislation that empowers the president to deport citizens of countries considered hostile to the United States.
Trump worked to increase deportations during his presidency from 2017 to 2021. By counting both expulsions of migrants and faster returns to Mexico by U.S. border agents, President Joe Biden deported more people in the fiscal year 2023 than any Trump year, according to government data.
