Trump campaign announces $138.7 million in July fundraising

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign and its affiliates announced Thursday that they had raised $138.7 million last month, less than what his November election rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, raised during the first week of her White House bid.

Trump’s campaign said it had $327 million raised as of the start of August, with just over three months to go until the election. Harris’ campaign has not yet announced its July fundraising haul or said how much it has in campaign funds, but said the vice president’s entry into the race has sparked an avalanche of new donations and volunteers.

The Republican National Committee, the former president’s campaign and other agencies previously announced they raised $331 million in the three-month period ending in June, meaning their July fundraising surpassed that pace.

This may have been contributed to by the fact that Trump survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, which encouraged some of his supporters. It may also have played a role that he later announced his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Some Democrats panicked at the prospect of a party loss in November with President Joe Biden as their nominee. But donors gave enough for Harris’ team to announce that had earned 200 million dollars in the first week after Biden revealed on July 21 that he was dropping his re-election bid and formally endorsing Harris to replace him on the ticket.

Since then, the vice president has increased her travels and launched a flurry of ads featuring her personal story and criticizing Trump. Some members of her party who felt Trump was the favorite in November after the Biden’s poor performance81, in the June 27 debate, now see a new contest with Harris, 59.

Harris will become the party’s formal presidential nominee through a virtual vote by delegates to the Democratic National Convention in a process expected to end Monday, and is expected to announce her running mate around the same time. The Democratic convention kicks off in Chicago on Aug. 19.
