Federal prosecutors have an audio recording from 2021 in which former President Donald Trump acknowledges that he kept a classified Pentagon document about a possible attack on Iran after leaving the White House, the agency said Wednesday. .
The network did not hear the recording, but cited multiple unnamed sources describing it. Reuters could not confirm the report.
The recording shows that Trump, who seeks the Republican presidential nomination by 2024, he understood that he withheld classified material after leaving the White House in 2021, according to the network.
Trump’s remarks indicate that he would like to share the information, but that he was aware of the limitations of his ability to declassify documents after leaving office, two sources told .
A representative for Trump did not immediately return a request for comment. Peter Carr, a spokesman for the Justice Department’s office of special counsel Jack Smith, also had no immediate comment.
Smith is investigating Trump’s handling of classified documents, as well as efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election that the Republican lost to Democrat Joe Biden.
