Tropical Storm Sara formed in the Caribbean Sea on Thursday and could cause flash flooding and deadly landslides in parts of Central America, including Honduras, according to forecasters.
The storm was expected to stall and drift near the coast of Honduras over the weekend, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Heavy rain is also forecast for Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala and western Nicaragua.
The storm is expected to strengthen before approaching Belize and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula early next week.
It was too early to determine Friday morning what conditions the system might bring next week to parts of the eastern Gulf of Mexico, including Florida, the Florida Keys and Cuba, the hurricane center said.
