The Tropical Storm Rafael It intensified to a Category 1 hurricane on Tuesday as it passed over Jamaica and headed toward western Cuba.
It’s another stroke of bad luck for Cuba, which has been dealing with blackouts as it deals with the aftermath of another hurricane that hit two weeks ago and left at least six dead in the eastern part of the island.
The storm was 35 kilometers (20 miles) southeast of Little Cayman, in the Cayman Islands, on Tuesday morning. It had maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph) and was moving northwest at 24 km/h (15 mph), according to the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Forecasters warned that Rafael was expected to hit the island on Wednesday after dumping rain on Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on Tuesday. The NHC warned of flooding and landslides.
