Trial begins against Russian opponent Alexei Navalni for extremism

June 19 () –

The trial for extremism against the influential Russian opponent Alexei Navalni, who has been behind bars since the beginning of 2021, began this Monday in the Vladimir region, where penal colony number 6 is located, where he remains imprisoned.

Navalni has been accused of creating an “extremist community”, inciting extremism, founding organizations that violate the rights of citizens, financing extremism, taking minors to carry out “dangerous acts” and “rehabilitating Nazism”, according to information from the Prosecutor’s Office

The activist’s team, who could face a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, has indicated that access to the room has been denied to journalists who have requested it, who will only be able to follow the hearing electronically in an adjoining room . Navalni’s parents have not been able to enter either, according to information from the Meduza news portal.

Navalni was jailed in January 2021 when he returned to Moscow from Berlin, where he had been recovering from a poisoning that he and Western governments blamed on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s security service. The Kremlin denies any responsibility.

The harsh measures in prison against the opponent, whose routine marks a walk around seven in the morning – when there is still no sun – are related to the publication of an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) on the purchase of products in jail at inflated prices.
