() — A train derailed “in the area of the 9 kilometer point of Interstate 40,” according to a statement from Anita Mortensen, a spokeswoman for the Mojave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).
The exit is home to a handful of truck stops and leads to Lake Havasu City, about 20 miles to the south.
Mortensen said the train appeared to be carrying hazardous materials, although “there are no reports of any spills at this time.”
The train derailed on land in a rural, non-residential area, but there are washes running from recent storms, he said. Authorities do not yet know how many cars derailed.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the railway company, BNSF, have been notified and will handle the investigation, according to Mortensen. Multiple agencies are responding in the meantime.
has contacted the NTSB and BNSF and has yet to hear back.
