TOYOTA GAZOO Racing presents the new Corolla GR-S

Largest exhibition of Egyptian artifacts to open at Shanghai Museum

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing launched the new Corolla GR-Sport in Argentina, the sports version of the best-selling sedan in history. The GR-Sport models seek to offer more sporty behavior, which in the Corolla GR-S translates into better control and stability of the vehicle at high speeds, both on straight lines and in curves. And in a direct and linear response of the steering, since the initial torque of the steering wheel is instantly transferred to the turning of the vehicle. This is a result of adjustments to the valving of the front and rear shock absorbers, and changes in the stiffness of the rear coils and stabilizer bar. It is also the result of the incorporation of additional floor covers, added to a rear aerodynamic deflector and lower structural reinforcement in the body.

In the new Corolla GR-S, this sporty performance evolved, since work was done on the calibration of the steering, in addition to a special set-up for the shifting, all with the aim of improving dynamic behavior at high speeds.

Regarding the design, the Corolla GR-S presents a new front design featuring a grille with more angular air channels, which optimize the flow of wind to improve its maneuverability. At the rear, the renewed optical assemblies stand out, now transparent with a black background, along with a new diffuser and a redesigned spoiler, which improve GR performance and performance. In addition, it incorporates newly designed 17” wheels, which give it a more aggressive character.

As for the mechanical assembly, the Corolla GR-Sport is equipped with the 2.0L “Dynamic Force” Dual VVT-i engine with direct and indirect injection, which is coupled to the “Direct Shift CVT” transmission with 10 pre-programmed speeds. The entire set delivers a maximum power of 171 HP at 6600 rpm, with a torque of 203 Nm.

Security

In terms of safety, all versions of the range include the Toyota Safety Sense active safety package – a system that was already available in all Corolla versions – which is added to the base equipment with seven airbags, stability control (VSC) and traction control (TRC). Although its primary components (millimeter wave radar and monocular camera) are the same, its characteristics may vary according to each model and/or version.

With this renewal, the Corolla’s Toyota Safety Sense package has two new features: Cruise Control (ACC) with full range* and Lane Keeping Assist System:

  • Full Range Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)*: From now on, ACC incorporates “full range”, which expands the system’s operating range in severe traffic and congestion situations. Once ACC is activated (from 30 km/h), the vehicle can stop automatically, maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front of it. Once you resume driving, you will move forward with the preset speed in all speed ranges by pressing the “+RES” button. If the vehicle in front stops and resumes driving within less than 3 seconds, the vehicle will resume cruising automatically.
  • Lane Keep Assist System: This system complements the Lane Departure Warning System (LDA) and is designed for use on highways to help the driver keep the vehicle centered in the lane on gently curving roads. The system will operate above 50km/h in lanes that are correctly marked with white or yellow lines, when full-range adaptive cruise control (ACC) is active and the steering wheel is being held.

Other systems

  • Forward Pre-Collision System (PCS)*: This system can detect motor vehicles traveling ahead on streets and highways. If the system detects the possibility of a collision, it will alert the driver through audible and visual warnings. If the driver responds and gently applies the brake, the system will activate Brake Assist to increase braking power to avoid or mitigate the accident. If in this situation, the driver does not apply the brakes, the system would apply the emergency brakes to avoid or mitigate a possible accident. In addition to vehicles, the system could detect pedestrians or cyclists.
  • Lane Departure Warning System (LDA)*: This system can alert the driver when the vehicle unintentionally deviates from its lane. Use the monocular camera to detect the position of the vehicle in relation to lane markings. If the vehicle begins to drift away without first activating the turn signal, the system can warn the driver with an audible alert. Additionally, the system can apply a small trajectory assistance to prevent the driver from unintentionally deviating from the lane.
  • Automatic High Beams (AHB)*: Designed to help the driver increase visibility at night thanks to the frequent use of high beams without distracting other drivers. The monocular camera detects the headlights of approaching vehicles and the taillights of vehicles ahead. Upon detection, the system automatically switches between high and low beams accordingly.

On the other hand, the SEG and GR-S versions are equipped with blind spot alert (BSM) and rear traffic alert (RCTA):

  • Blind Spot Alert (BSM): This system is designed to alert the driver if there is a vehicle positioned in the angle not visible from the rearview mirrors. Ideal for overtaking maneuvers, lane changes or cornering.
  • Rear Traffic Alert (RCTA): It sends an alert when detecting the presence of other vehicles approaching from the rear sides, being useful in reversing maneuvers, for example, when leaving a parking lot.

Finally, in the GR-S version, front and rear parking sensors have been added to improve safety and precision during maneuvers.
