Torrential rains in Afghanistan leave nearly 20 dead in the last three days

ISLAMABAD, July 25 (DPA/EP) –

The torrential rains and floods that have affected Afghanistan for several weeks have left at least 18 dead and around 25 injured in the last three days, as announced by the authorities of the Asian country.

The inclement weather has affected some fifteen provinces in the country, especially in the eastern and central regions, according to the spokesman for the Department of Disaster Management, Mohamed Nasim Haqqani, to the German news agency DPA.

In addition, Haqqani has reported that hundreds of hectares of crops have been lost, also on a road that gives access to the capital, Kabul, and that it has had to be closed due to flooding and severe damage to a bridge.

Now the meteorological authorities have warned that more rainfall is expected in the coming days, although it is true that the rains have been affecting Afghanistan for weeks, which a week ago already lamented the death of 60 people also due to storms.

It is true that seasonal storms are a common phenomenon in Afghanistan at certain times of the year. During the month of August 2021, more than a hundred people died in a week and hundreds of houses were affected by the rains in Nuristan, in the east of the country.

The floods these days take place at a time when the country is trying to recover from a devastating earthquake in June in the provinces of Paktika and Khost, which left more than 1,200 dead and deepened the humanitarian crisis in which Afghanistan is plunged.
