Three women and one of their babies, just over a year old, were injured on Sunday afternoon when they were run over by a National Police car in the centre of Madrid.
One of the women was seriously injured, while the baby was admitted to hospital with a reserved prognosis. The baby’s mother and a third woman are in a mild and less serious condition, respectively.
The accident took place at around 4:10 p.m. at the intersection of Narváez and Alcalá streets, police and Madrid Emergency sources told EFE.
The police patrol was heading to the area around the accident site in response to a request for support from other officers who were trying to arrest a man who had assaulted another person and who was still acting violently. According to police sources, the patrol was driving with its sound and light signals on, and therefore other vehicles were moving out of its way.
However, one of the drivers, apparently unintentionally, crossed the path of the patrol car and the police officer at the wheel had to change direction abruptly. The police car ended up mounting the pavement and hitting three women and the baby of one of them.
The Municipal Police have opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident. Meanwhile, the Samur-Civil Protection paramedics have treated the injured. The most serious case, with a foot in a catastrophic state, was a 47-year-old woman who was admitted to La Paz Hospital.
The other woman, aged 34, suffered a fractured femur and multiple bruises and was taken to the 12 de Octubre Hospital with a less serious prognosis, according to Emergencias Madrid. Her baby, just over a year old, had facial trauma and head trauma and was admitted to the Niño Jesús Hospital with a reserved prognosis pending the extent of the blow to the head.
The third woman, with a leg injury, was taken to Gregorio Marañón in a mild condition. In addition, the paramedics treated three more people – including the baby’s grandmother – for anxiety attacks and two of them were taken to hospital.
