At a news conference in the capital, police said a 19-year-old Austrian citizen, whom they identify as an Islamic State sympathizer, was arrested on Wednesday morning in Ternitz, Lower Austria, while another arrest was made that same morning in Vienna.
“The two suspects were radicalized via the Internet, a 19-year-old citizen of Austria swore allegiance to the current leader of the Islamic State in early July,” police said.
Authorities went on to say that the two suspects had taken “concrete preparatory measures” for a terrorist attack after police suspected explosives were stored in the suspect’s home in Ternitz.
Police also said chemicals had been seized from the 19-year-old’s home and were being evaluated, the Associated Press reported.
“From the current point of view of the investigation we assume that the target of the attack was events in the Vienna region,” the police continued.
All tickets for canceled shows will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days, the concert promoter said.
