At least three people have died in a forest fire that broke out on Monday in the Turkish town of Cesme, in the western province of Izmir, authorities have confirmed.
The bodies were found during search and rescue operations, which have been underway since midday on Monday and were hampered by the winds in the area, which caused the flames to spread rapidly.
According to information gathered by the Turkish newspaper ‘Hurriyet’, the deceased are two adults and a child, allegedly members of a family that tried to flee the flames with another family, from which they separated trying to find escape routes given the proximity of the flames.
Firefighters are still working in the area to try to control the flames, with some progress in controlling the fire. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and the authorities have not yet made any statements on the matter.
