Thiruvananthapuram () – Two women in their fifties were killed in a human sacrifice intended to attract money and prosperity. The incident occurred in a town in the Pathanamthitta district, in the southern state of Kerala. Yesterday, the police arrested three people allegedly involved in the crime.

Kerala State Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated: “Only someone who is mentally ill can commit such crimes” and added that “black magic and witchcraft rituals can only be seen as a challenge to civilized society.”

The victims were originally from the villages of Kadavanthara and Kalady, and worked as street vendors of lottery tickets. They were kidnapped in June and September of this year. The suspects confessed that they dismembered the bodies before burying them near the village of Elanthoor, in Thiruvalla.

Kochi Police Commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam explained that officers discovered the first case, which dates back to June, while investigating the second.

Bhagaval Singh, a local masseur, his wife Laila, along with Rasheed Muhammand Shafi allegedly lured the women to the couple’s home, where the human sacrifice was then performed.

“We discovered that it was the same house. The third person not only played an intermediary role, but was also instrumental in convincing the two women to perform the ritual,” added Chakilam.

Inspector General Prakash said that more details will be provided after the exhumation and investigation. “At first glance it would look like a case of murder for profit through black magic. The police will investigate all aspects and details.”

It is speculated that Rasheed Shafi approached the victims under the pretext of inviting them to act in a pornographic film, promising to pay them a large sum, but the police have yet to confirm this version.

The only certain thing is that the murders were committed by superstition. Prime Minister Vijayan urged citizens to identify these “evil practices” and “inform the public opinion”.
