“A national Health Emergency is declared for a period of 90 days due to the unusual increase in cases of Guillain Barré Syndrome,” the Peruvian Ministry of Health reported in a statement and explained that it will apply to the 25 regions of the country.

This is due to a rebound in Guillain-Barré cases. “There has been a significant increase in recent weeks that forces us to take actions as a State to protect the health and life of the population,” declared the Minister of Health, César Vásquez.

At least four people have died and the number of cases exceeded 180 between January and July.

Acquire immunoglobin

Also known as acute polyradiculoneuritis, Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a neurological disorder. It is characterized by progressive muscle weakness, which develops over two to four weeks and can affect the respiratory system. The disease usually appears a few weeks after a viral or bacterial infection or more unusually after a vaccination, according to the WHO.

The Peruvian government clarified that declaring a state of health emergency will make it possible to acquire immunoglobulin and thus treat affected patients for the next two years.
