Three jihadists recently escaped from a Mauritanian prison and a gendarme have died this Saturday in the Adrar region in an operation by the security forces, according to the authorities. A fourth escaped jihadist has been able to be arrested.
In a “complex operation” that has lasted several hours, there have been clashes between the jihadists and the security forces. The first have hidden in the mountainous region of Waar, reports the Mauritanian newspaper ‘Esseraj’ citing sources in the security apparatus.
The suspects had been followed since Friday afternoon and after confirming their presence in the area and studying the terrain, the operation was launched on Saturday. The gendarmes stormed the place and killed three of the suspects and the fourth surrendered.
Military aviation participated in the operation and residents of the area have confirmed that shots could be heard, reports the Atlas Info news agency.
The jihadists fled from the Nouakchott Central Prison on Sunday afternoon, taking advantage of a riot in which two members of the National Guard died.
