At least three people were killed and several others wounded in a shooting Monday in a New Mexico city where authorities ordered schools closed.
“There are multiple civilian victims” from the event that occurred in Farmington, local police reported.
He added, in a Facebook post, that a suspect “was confronted and killed at the scene.”
Two police officers were shot, including a member of the city police and one from the New Mexico State Police, according to the message. Both were reported to be in stable condition at the San Juan Regional Medical Center.
“The identity of the suspect is unknown and there are no other known threats at this time,” police said, adding that San Juan city, state and county police were involved.
The event was reported shortly after 11 am in the Brookside Park area, and the authorities ordered what they call “preventive confinement” in schools.
Megan Mitchell, an officer with the San Juan County Police Department, called the incident “an open and active investigation.” She claimed to have no further information at the moment.
Federal agents from Phoenix were heading to Farmington, the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said on Twitter.
