Threats loom over the Guaraní Kaiowá indigenous people in Brazil

Since last July, the escalation of an agrarian conflict that dates back more than a century has caused a trail of bloodshed in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Several indigenous people from the Guaraní Kaiowá ethnic group have been injured in violent attacks that have their origin in seven attempts to occupy the Panambi Lagoa Rica indigenous lands. This is an area of 12,000 hectares, located 192 kilometers from Campo Grande, the capital of this state, and which these indigenous people have claimed for decades. In 2011, the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai) demarcated this territory in their favor, but the reappropriation process ended up in court, after rural producers in the area filed a request to annul the demarcation study.
