According to data from Sensor Tower, Threads was positioned as the most downloaded app of the day, followed by Temu and Monopoly. However, the figure of 30 million new accounts has not yet been confirmed.

On the other hand, Twitter, Threads’ rival, is positioned as the sixth most downloaded social network and in June 2023 it had eight million downloads. Instagram is positioned as the second most downloaded app and in the same period it had nine million downloads.

“Meta has its own challenges with its large investments in the metaverse that have failed to reach users and be massive,” shared Jose Daniel Zegarra, Consumer Research Manager, IDC Latin America. “Despite these challenges, Meta remains Twitter’s most credible competitor, with extensive resources and an audience of more than 3 billion people who use Facebook, Instagram and its other apps.”

According to Zegarra, one of the hooks of the Threads application is that users will be able to follow people they already follow on Instagram but “we have to wait and see who is the leader of digital discussions in real time.”

What is Instagram Threads for?

Threads is an Instagram app where you can post threads, reply to other people, and follow profiles that interest you. These threads and replies may include short texts, links, photos or videos, or a combination of those elements.

People can also follow you to see your threads and replies in their feed and profile, and just like Instagram, you can customize your profile’s privacy settings.

“Our plan is for Threads to become part of the fediverso, a social network of different servers managed by third parties that are connected and can communicate with each other (…) and that allows you to communicate with people from other fediverso platforms that we don’t owned or controlled by us”, reads the privacy notice.

But it is also important to remember that the application will collect health and condition data, financial information, user content, browsing and search history, location, contacts, private information, purchase history.

On the other hand, they also mention in their privacy notice that this information will be used to personalize ads and other experiences on both Threads and Instagram.

Although anyone with an Instagram account can create a Threads profile, it’s not yet available to all users and the European Union has banned its use over privacy concerns.
