13 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Thousands of protesters demonstrated outside the official office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday to demand an agreement for the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip after a march that started in Tel Aviv four days ago.
The protest began last Wednesday when a group of hostages’ relatives and supporters set out from Tel Aviv, on the coast, and culminated on Saturday with their entry into Jerusalem and a mass protest.
One of the relatives, Einav Zangauker, accused Netanyahu of “trying again and again to separate me from Matan,” his 24-year-old son who is being held in Gaza. Zangauker said that “we are close” to reaching an agreement and again attacked the current Israeli government.
“We deserve better leaders who take responsibility. The hostages also deserve to hug their mothers and fathers,” he added.
Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv, the epicentre of the protests, a banner measuring more than 10 metres long with the inscription “Netanyahu is finishing off the hostages” has been unfurled on Kaplan Street. The demonstrators have called for Netanyahu’s resignation for another week, the calling of early elections and an agreement for the release of the hostages.
There have also been protests in other cities such as Haifa, Beersheba and Herzliya. Roadblocks have also been repeated at points such as the road between Raanana and Kfar Saba.
An estimated 120 hostages remain in the Gaza Strip, half of the roughly 240 who were taken to the Palestinian enclave by Gazan militants who entered Israeli territory on October 7. An estimated 1,200 people were also killed in the attack.
