Thousands of people took to the streets of various Syrian cities this Wednesday to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the start of the war in Syria, unleashed as a result of the repression of the pro-democratic mobilizations registered in 2011 in line with the ‘Arab Spring’.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has indicated that participants in the protests have chanted slogans calling for the resignation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and expressing their support for the main demands of the 2011 revolution.
The body, based in London and informants in the Arab country, has stated that the protests have taken place in the cities of Idlib, Raqqa and Ras al Ain, as well as in other towns in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib controlled by rebel groups. .
The president of the Syrian National Coalition of Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, Salem al Meslet, has affirmed through his account on the social network Twitter that “the squares welcome free people again” and has said that “the people , with one voice, chants ‘The people want the fall of the regime’, their demand since 2011”.
“We are proud of the stands of the Free Syrian people, who remain steadfast despite wounds and pain. They are a great people who have stuck to their principles, preserved their revolution and fought to rebuild a great Syria exhausted by brutality and the terror of the Al Assad regime”, he asserted.
Along these lines, the Syrian National Coalition of Revolutionary and Opposition Forces has pointed out on Twitter that “the Syrian people renew their commitment to continue their revolution despite the betrayal and the attempts to eliminate thousands of crimes and to normalize relations with Assad’s murderous regime”.
The organization has thus criticized the decision of several countries in the region to reestablish ties with Damascus or to open the door to a normalization of relations, after more than a decade of isolation from the Al Assad regime in response to the war.
“We will continue our revolution until we achieve our goal. The Syrian people reject everything that does not mean obtaining their freedom, restoring their rights and building their State, destroyed by a murderous and criminal regime,” the organization said, while publishing photographs of thousands of people gathered in the city of Idlib during the protests this Wednesday.
The war has left some 614,000 dead and millions of internally displaced persons and refugees, according to data compiled by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, although it is feared that the death toll is higher.
