MUNICH, Oct. 9 (DPA/EP) –

Several thousand people have demonstrated in different cities of Germany this Saturday to call for a freeze on rents, according to figures from the organizers, while inflation breaks records across Europe.

“We are very pleased with how today’s event turned out, which shows for us how many people are concerned that they cannot afford a rental,” Matthias Weinzierl, the spokesman for Mietenstopp Kampagne, said in a statement.

The campaign has been developed together with 16 activist groups, including the German Tenants Association, the German Federation of Trade Unions and the Workers’ Welfare Association.

The group has called for a nationwide rent freeze for the next six years, during which they believe housing market legislation should be reformed and more affordable rental housing built.
