Thousands of people have supported this Saturday the call of some thirty political parties, unions and social organizations gathered in the Coalition for the Cost of Life to protest the increase in prices.
The organizers have asked the Irish Government to take drastic measures to tackle the cost of living and housing crisis, coinciding with the imminent presentation next Tuesday of the general budgets.
The president of the Sinn Féin party, Mary-Lou McDonald, has participated in the demonstration and has accused the Government of “not listening to ordinary people” during her speech. The crowd has responded with cries of “They don’t care!”
“This cost of living crisis shows once again that there is a lot of inequality in Ireland. We need more than a change of Taoiseach (Prime Minister). We need a change of government. We need a government of the people and a government that brings real change. “, he argued.
McDonald has called for a ban on rent increases for at least three years, more funding for health and disability services, and two-thirds cuts in the price of nursery schools. “They have to do all this and they have to do it now, with a sense of urgency and purpose”, she has riveted.
Organizations such as People Before Profits, the Congress of Irish Trade Unions, the Students’ Union of Ireland or the Parliament of Irish Senior Citizens have also participated. There has also been a similar call in Derry, Northern Ireland.
