MADRID Dec. 22 () –
Tens of thousands of people demonstrated this Sunday in Belgrade to protest against the government of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and to demand accountability after the death of 15 people after the collapse of a train station awning.
The rally, called by students, filled Slavija Square in the Serbian capital. The event began with 15 minutes of silence for the victims of the accident and continued with whistles and horns amid banners with slogans such as “Your hands have blood”, “Children’s Revolution” or “Murderers! The streets will judge you “.
The Ministry of the Interior has confirmed about 29,000 attendees at the demonstration, in which farmers, well-known actors and protesters from different parts of the country have been present, with a notable presence of university students and high school students, who have occupied educational centers.
Vucic himself has recognized the “great concentration” in Belgrade. “These people are related to the opposition. I have always been willing to listen to what they think and what they believe is important to do for our country,” he stated in a video published on social networks.
“That is why we have to listen to each other, so that we can achieve something of value for the future,” he argued before calling for unity, referring to the flag he carried to the UN General Assembly in May. “We must unite under this tricolor, with our common objectives,” he stated.
