Thousands bid farewell to Hamas leader at funeral in Iran's capital

Khamenei leads ceremony at Tehran University

Aug. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The funeral of the political leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Ismail Haniyeh, began on Thursday in the Iranian capital, Tehran, where thousands of people traveled to attend a ceremony presided over by the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Many of those present at the funeral carried pictures and banners with Haniyeh’s face. Shouting “Death to Israel” and carrying Palestinian flags, the mourners marched from Tehran University to Azadi Square in the west.

Khamenei has vowed “harsh punishment” for the killing of Haniyeh, who died early Wednesday in an attack on the building where he was staying during a visit to Tehran, which has been blamed on Israeli forces – which have not yet commented.

Iran’s supreme leader, who met with several Hamas representatives this morning, has reaffirmed the “terrorist” nature of Israel’s “Zionist regime,” according to reports from the Iranian news agency IRNA.

The coffin is expected to be transported to Doha, the capital of Qatar, where it will be buried on Friday.
