It is the most used computer client in the world, with millions of gamers using it daily. There are thousands and thousands of video games on it, and as a hallmark of the platform, it hasn’t changed its appearance for years. But it does change, at least in the details.
Steam has modified the process of obtaining free games (or DLCs) to make it more comfortable, and it is a change that has been received with great joy by the players.
If you’re a regular Steam user, you’ll no doubt remember that if a game is free on Steam and you want the title, to claim it, you have no choice but to choose to hit the play buttonwhich starts the installation process.
You can then cancel the process, after a short wait while the gears turn a bit, but this is a bit of unnecessary hassle, since it forces you to install it on your PC, instead of adding it to your library without the need to force an unnecessary installation. Good, so far.
Now, Valve has introduced an “Add to Library” button that can be clicked to add the product to your game libraryand that’s it: no more wasting time canceling an installation you don’t want.
In the same way, with the free DLCs, playing it launches the game, and now instead of that, you just click to grab the content, and you’re done; a clearly easier and more comfortable process.
But as always when something is improved, there are those who see the positive side. Reddit users have expressed opinions that Valve has been too slow to do this, and should have done it years ago.
To be fair, this was not an insurmountable problem, since we have spent almost two decades enduring it, but it’s still an improvement on the design of Steam, a platform that isn’t famous for changing or improving things…quickly.
This change is for the better and makes our lives easier: it’s never too late if happiness is good.
