Competition from foldable smartphones grows

At the 2019 MWC, that is, the one prior to the pandemic, there were several announcements for folding phones, among the most relevant was the Huawei Mate X, where at that time Richard Yu, head of the Chinese brand’s consumer division, stated: “The future is here”. This after presenting this phone that came four days after the one presented by Samsung, the Galaxy Fold.

Part of this new fever is also due to the possibility of having more powerful chipsets, as is the case with the new Oppo phone, who chose the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ to support their foldable.

In an interview, Juvenal González, CEO of Qualcomm Mexico, pointed out that one of the verticals that he is most excited about is folding phones, since it is one of the ones that has grown the most and for which they have had to push innovation in the sector.

“We make technology that our clients require, but they decide if they integrate it or not and in what way they do it,” González pointed out.

Unlike Oppo’s phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

The folding market also continues to grow. According to the analysis firm Counterpoint, this type of technology will grow in 2023, driven by 53% and a shipment of more than 22 million devices in 2022.

“The numbers are small when you put them in the context of a broader market, but if we look at the ever-important ultra-premium ($1,000+) segment, we see foldable devices starting to take hold,” says Tarun Pathak, director of smartphone analytics at Counterpoint. “In that category, folding shipment shares have reached double digits this year, and we expect it to exceed 20% in 2023.”

Features of the Oppo Flip N2

Its main camera is 50 MP and the Hasselblad imaging system provides a good photographic experience. It has a new generation flex hinge and the multi-angle FlexForm mode allows you to position the screen at any angle between 45 and 110 degrees. This feature also helps the crease remain discreet, even after prolonged use.

This phone also has a large 4,300 mAh battery and 44W fast charging which will help users get a full day of battery life.

The company says it contacted TÜV Rheinland to independently test the durability of the Find N2 Flip. The phone is certified to withstand more than 400,000 folds at standard room temperature, which is equivalent to opening and closing the phone about 100 times a day for more than 10 years. It was also verified that it supports more than 100,000 folds at a temperature of 50° C, with 95% humidity and -20° C.

This feature is relevant since technology companies have received criticism about the durability of their folding products, since there is a fold limit that does not exist in the case of other phones and therefore can last less than two years.

This smartphone will be available in Cosmic Lilac and Astral Black colors from February 15, 2023, with a price of 849 pounds (just over 18,000 pesos) in the United Kingdom and, according to Oppo, it will soon reach Mexico.
