This is the NASA space suit to step on the Moon again

NASA presented this March 15 the new space suits, ordered from Axiom Spacewith which its astronauts of the Artemis III mission they will venture onto the surface of the Moon’s south pole.

Called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU, the space suit is based on NASA space suit prototype developments and incorporates the latest technology, improved mobility and additional protection against the dangers on the Moon.

The AxEMU features the range of motion and flexibility needed to further explore the lunar landscape, and the suit will accommodate a wide range of crew members, accommodating at least 90 percent of the US male and female populationexplained those responsible for the program during his presentation at the Space Center Houston. The first woman to set foot on the Moon will wear one of these costumes on Artemis III.

Although this prototype uses a dark gray cover material, the final version will probably be completely white when used by NASA astronauts on the surface of the Moon, to help keep astronauts safe and cool while working in the harsh environment of space.

NASA laid the foundation for AxEMU with the prototyping efforts of the agency’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) which advanced spacesuit designs for multiple destinations. Axiom Space used the experience, insights, and data behind the xEMU as the foundation for the design and development of the AxEMU, including advances in technology, training, astronaut feedback on comfort and maneuverability, and compatibility with other NASA systems.

NASA experts defined the technical and safety standards according to which the space suits will be manufacturedand Axiom Space has agreed to comply with these key agency requirements.

IT WILL BE TESTED IN SPACE BEFORE THE MISSION

Axiom Space is responsible for the design, development, qualification, certification, and production of flight training spacesuits and support equipment, including tools, to enable the Artemis III mission. The company will test the suit in a space-like environment before the mission.. NASA maintains authority for astronaut training, mission planning, and service system approval.
