A team of scientists from Purdue University has developed a paint that reflects more than 98% of sunlight and, as a result, is capable of reducing the temperature of a room by 5 degrees during the day and up to 12 degrees at night.

That is why many scientists and researchers have gotten down to work to try to find something that helps anyone improve the temperature of their home in any way.

For example, an invention capable of cooling a house up to 9 degrees without the need for electricity that could retire air conditioning has been presented, but for the moment there is still no estimated launch date. And, of course, there are many more projects in the air.

In 2020, a team of scientists from Purdue University led by mechanical engineering professor Xiulin Ruan presented the whitest paint in the world, which earned it entry into the Guinness Book of Records.

Its main virtue? It was able to bounce solar radiation by 95%. Now the team of scientists The formula has improved and this percentage stands at 98.1%.

To give you an idea of ​​the difference, the typical white paint you can buy at a hardware store reflects 80-90% sunlight, which prevents it from cooling the surfaces it covers.

To achieve this whiteness, the team has studied more than 100 different materials and tested 50 different formulas for each material. After experimentation, they settled on a chemical compound called barium sulfate that allows the paint to scatter more of the spectrum of solar radiation, Li explains in a press release.

“We found that using barium sulfate you can theoretically make things very, very reflective, which means they are very, very white,” explains the leader of the team of scientists.

The results? So with this formulation, paint can lower the temperature of a room by up to 5 degrees during the day and up to 12 degrees at night.

In terms of savings, This can mean a consumption of up to 40% less air conditioningaccording to the researchers’ calculations.

The best? It is not a problem for the eyes. That is, it is not blinding, since what it really does is scatter the light.

Beyond this ultra-white paint, the team of scientists is also working on paints of different colors based on the same chemical principles that “will work less ideally than white, but better than some of the other commercial colors“.

The key point of all this is that these types of paints and materials can play a crucial role in the fight against climate change if applied on a large scale.
