The Master in Territorial Planning and Management of the Catholic University, which finds more than half of its graduates publishing in scientific journals, has its call open for the year 2023.
By Millaray Mariqueo, Science in Chile.-This year the Master in Territorial Planning and Management intends to start with its sixteenth version, with a current accreditation awarded from 2022 to 2025 by the CNA, allowing its students to apply for ANID benefits.
This is a professional and blended program, that is, there are no classes every week, with an average of 10 students entering the year and 82 graduates to date. What is interesting is that half of them publish their research in scientific journals, “this is one of the most productive programs in Chile in terms of the number of articles, it is a figure that few programs can say.
Enter people who have never read a paperand leave with the ability to publish in the scientific world, that is one of the great strengths of this program” indicated Jimmy Pincheira, Director of the Master.
The academic mentioned that one of the main changes made by the program was to incorporate a subject called Research Seminar 1 and 2, where students begin the first day of classes with their research work or thesis.

However, they are currently facing challenges related to making visible the need for territorial planning as tools to reduce territorial gaps, “I think there is a challenge that has to do with people understanding that planning is important to reduce gaps and territorial imbalances, the idea is that public officials who work in the territory, visualize the need to have specific tools, tools that can be obtained in our Master’s.
Lines of investigation
Currently the Master’s is divided into five lines of research, one of them is Regional Urban Planning and Management and includes all the historical themes of land use planning on an urban and regional scale, in addition to the conceptual, regulatory frameworks and methodological approaches.
The second line of research is called Local and Territorial Development, here issues related to development enter as a basis for overcoming inequality and rural and urban poverty. In this matter, theoretical and methodological aspects, studies of territorial imbalances and those that include issues of poverty and quality of life are of interest.
Another line is Natural Systems and Phenomena, which includes socio-natural risks, the effects on the socio-territorial system and theoretical-methodological and political-administrative aspects.
The fourth line is called Planning Techniques and Tools, in which issues related to the process and methods and instruments of territorial planning are dealt with.
And one last line is called Geomatics Applied to Territorial Planning, this line is more instrumental, it has to do with issues related to spatial data collection and its integration with political-administrative and environmental information.
