This is how the application developed by Colombians that detects panic attacks works

Yesid Peñaloza, Marlon Guette and Alejanda Vergara were finalists in the technology competition ‘Huawei ICT Competition’, taking third place for developing a application to detect panic attacks. The tool is called CalmSense.

The young people from Barranquilla reached the final of the competition, which was held in China, after winning the first place in Latin America in the innovation category. And, although they did not win at the world level, they left the name of the country and its city high.

Seeking to help people with their mental health, Yesid, Marlon and Alejandra designed the project, which works with the help of a ‘smartband’ (activity bracelet), which analyzes blood pressure and oxygenation levels with the help of an accelerometer to detect vibrations.

Besides, generated an artificial intelligence (AI) model that collects the data and carries out processing of them “to be able to detect a panic attack beforehand, and thus be able to notify both an emergency contact and the person themselves“, according to Yesid Peñaloza.

Through an interview with ‘Caracol Radio’, Marlon Guette explained the opinions that the jury had about his project: “Always in these technology issues and in youth issues today, mental health issues are discussed, since we come from a pandemic cycle, so there we realized that it is something serious, something that affects people. . They (the jurors) liked that a lot, that the project focused on a real problem and that if it is not taken into account, it can bring disastrous results.“.

“They were happy about the mental health issue“, expressed the Barranquilla native regarding the assessments made to them in the contest held in China.

For her part, teacher Daniela Charris, from the Universidad del Norte and who was also part of the project, stated for the previously mentioned medium that It was a surprise to arrive in the Asian countrybut also a great joy to see the fruits of the effort and work it took to create this tool.
